The Art of Exceptional Headshots: Because Your Brand Deserves Better Thank OK

Ever seen a headshot so good it could be a magazine cover? That's what I have delivered, consistently to my clients for the last 7 years.

My clients walk away with photos that rival Michelle Obama's portraits - and I'm proud to say I know the secret to beautiful and memorable headshots that stand the test of time.

Keep reading to the end to learn them all too.

The Magic Behind the Lens

What makes my headshots special? They capture that sweet spot between reality and aspiration. My clients look like themselves - but elevated. They embody their true essence while projecting their highest potential. And the best part? They achieve this without the usual stress that comes with being in front of the camera.

Why DIY Headshots Often Fall Short

Let's talk about what typically goes wrong when people attempt to get a good headshot:

1. The Solo Struggle

I get it, you can do it all. I know that you are unstoppable and capable of overcoming every challenge in your way. But you should know that the time that you'll spend trying to get a gorgeous headshot on your own could also be spent on money-generating activities that will move your brand forward and pay for more of the things you love.

Not only is Photography a complex skill where we learn things like lighting, posing, composition, editing and technical know-how. Self portraiture which is the art of taking a photo of yourself is a skill within a skill.

I AM a photographer and I still 100% prefer to have my photo or headshot taken by a professional photographer than taking it on my own. Choosing to do it all alone requires so much more than we think and relying solely on this could be a big part of why your headshots never feel quite right.

2. The Planning Gap

Let's move on to reason number 2 your headshots don't seem to dazzle the way you really want them to.

Those effortless-looking shots you see here on my website and social media pages? They're anything but. A truly impactful headshot requires thoughtful preparation. You need to consider:

  • Your brand message and values

  • Your current projects and goals

  • Practical elements like wardrobe and styling

  • The emotional impact you want to create

Before you walk into the studio and I pick up a camera we have a conversation on our "Kickoff Call". I ask the questions above and so much more so that we can plan a photo shoot that is filled with intention and up-to-date information on you and your personal brand.

Doing a little leg work before your photoshoot not only helps us make the right choices for your photography session but it also relaxes my clients and eases their anxiety. They know we have a plan, and they understand what they are walking into which helps boost their confidence and ease their anxieties.

3. The "Good Enough" Trap

Now let's say you've decided on a photographer but that experience didn't yield exceptional headshots either. One more place to look to improve the quality of your headshots is to choose the photographer who will represent you and your brand wisely.

Just because your friend, partner or cousin has an expensive camera doesn't mean they can capture your professional essence.

When choosing a photographer, ask yourself:

  • Do they make you feel confident and comfortable?

  • Do they understand your vision and goals?

  • Do they have the technical expertise to execute?

  • Can they help guide you through the process?

  • Do they have a team that can help you with the areas you aren't an expert in?

If the answer is yes, you are absolutely on your way.

Don't forget to communicate honestly with your photographer. Talk about the things that scare you or make you nervous so that they can give you the reassurance that you need and deserve.

The Bottom Line

So how do you create exceptional headshots? You give them the time, planning, and investment that they need to succeed.

You now know that they require planning, connection, and professional skills. They are your opportunity to tell the story of YOU and working with folks who get it and you is how you create something special that represents you the way you’ve always wanted to be represented.

Remember: Be intentional with your choices. Be strategic with your image. Your personal brand deserves nothing less.
